Total off
$610

B9 reads $610 too low. E6 is flagged for you to confirm.

The analyst

Total expenses is off by $610. B9 is typed in as 7,975, and the five rows above it sum to 8,585. E6 is a typed in number in a column of formulas, so it will not update.

What to do next
  • 1Q3 P&L!B9B9 reads 7,975, but the 5 values above it sum to 8,585. Replace the typed value in B9 with =SUM(B4:B8).
  • 2Q3 P&L!E6E6 is a typed in number, but E5 above it is a formula, =SUM(B5:D5). I add B6 to D6 and get 5,025 where E6 reads 4,950. Confirm E6 should be calculated, and if so put =SUM(B6:D6) back.

What the checker looks for

Five checks on every sheet, each finding named by cell, with the fix.

Questions

Why is my Excel sum not adding up?

The usual causes are a total typed over its formula so it no longer updates, a range that leaves out a row, and a broken reference such as #REF!. The checker finds each one and names the cell.

What does the checker look for?

Five checks: totals that do not add up, figures that do not tie to the sheet they point at, error cells, numbers typed over formulas, and formulas that break the pattern.

Is the check free?

Yes. Your office is free for 30 days with no card, and the check stays free after that.

Why do I sign in to check a file?

So the report is yours. It sits in your office behind your email, and it is there when you come back.

What happens to my file?

Your spreadsheet stays on your device. The check runs in your browser, and we receive only the findings: the file name, the cell, the type of problem, the amount involved and a plain English note, which can quote figures from the file. You can turn the note and the amount off in settings. We never get the workbook.

Find the wrong cell before anyone else does.
